Omar Apollo plays it cool in queer 'Stayback' music video (Watch)

R&B singer-songwriter Omar Apollo premiered the music video for her new single "Stayback." In the dazed clip, he seemingly has eyes for another guy.

"Stayback" is the lead single from Apollo's upcoming debut album. The 23-year-old artist has been keeping the Internet abuzz for the past few years with his vibe-y singles and last year's critically-acclaimed Friends EP. This first taste of Apollo's highly-anticipated LP is appetizing.

Apollo wrote and produced "Stayback" by himself. Ever the soul man, Omar slips in and out of his falsetto as he fights his feelings for an old flame. "I can't help that you been on my mind," he repeatedly sings. Distorted bass and a mean guitar solo soundtrack the trippy, kiss-off track. Apollo embraces that funk that he grew up on a Chicano and comes through with a sexy, slow-burn banger.

In the music video for "Stayback," Apollo rocks the Cruella De Vil two-toned hair like we've seen this week from Ricky Montaner in Mau y Ricky's "Papás" clip. (A new Latinx fashion alert?) After cruising the streets with his friends, Apollo hits up the pool and gazes at a guy who is wrapped up in a girl's arms. He falls into said pool and later stumbles to his motel room. That guy he was looking at shows up at the door.

The queer representation. We stan. In an era where labels are becoming irrelevant, Apollo hasn't spoken publicly about his sexual orientation. During LGBTQ+ Pride month, he tweeted out two of his old songs ("Beauty Boy" and "Rokit") that have affectionate lyrics about men. "Happy Pride, be yaselfff," Apollo wrote with the rainbow flag emoji. This week he also posted some photos on Instagram getting cozy with Colombian singer Kali Uchis. However Apollo might identify, you do you, man.

"Stayback" is now available on all major streaming platforms. Hopefully Apollo's debut album is due out later this year (praying hands emoji).
