As one of the last acts of Pride 2019, pop superstar Miley Cyrus debuted her Black Mirror alter-ego Ashley O live as part of her Glastonbury set. Ashley's "On A Roll," a sassy take of a Nine Inch Nails song, has become a gay club anthem since dropping this month.
Cyrus recently returned to music with her EP She is Coming, which dropped late last month. In tandem with promotion of that release, she was also a guest star on the Netflix series Black Mirror. Cyrus played the role of Ashley O, a violet-wigged pop star who is under the control of manager. In that episode, Cyrus as Ashley remixes the Nine Inch Nails song "Head Like a Hole" as "On a Roll," an empowering pop bop with a trap-lite lean.
Personally, I've seen a lot of my friends and people I follow on social media embrace "On a Roll" as a gay anthem. After the episode aired, there was a demand for Ashley O's songs, so "On a Roll" was released as a single with the B-side "Right Where I Belong." A music video for "On a Roll" followed on the Netflix YouTube channel where Cyrus once dons the wig with a team of dancers. It's so far amassed over 10 million views.
Like in her Hannah Montana days, Cyrus debuted on the Billboard charts under another name, Ashley O, this week. The fuss around "On a Roll" pushed the song to No. 19 on the Pop Digital Songs Sales chart, No. 39 on the Digital Song Sales chart and No. 23 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. Ashley is on a roll, alright.
Cyrus was one of the headliners as this year's Glastonbury music festival and during her set, Ashley O made a cameo appearance. She emerged with her violet-colored wig on and a sparkling jumpsuit to sing "On a Roll." The crowd cheered when Cyrus asked, "Do I have any Ashley O fans out here?" Australian pop goddess Kylie Minogue was filmed bopping along. In a nod to Nine Inch Nails, she ditched the wig and later roared through the original "Head Like a Hole."
Oh, honey. Ashley O did THAT.
